Chesterfield Montessori School

Elementary

6-12 years

CMS Elementary provides a powerful learning environment for young people. At this age, students build on the capacity for concrete learning developed in the Primary. They begin to think abstractly as their ability to reason increases. The question “What?” is supplemented by the questions “Why?” and “How?” as the students reach out to understand their world.

Cosmic education

The school year begins with a dramatic series of lessons that demonstrate the physical structure and cosmic order of the universe. The students pursue their interests in the areas of geography, history, mathematics, geometry, biology and language. Exploration in these areas is encouraged through trips outside the classroom to community resources, such as the library, botanical garden, universities, the science center, etc.

Research and experimentation

Class work focuses on research and experimentation. The student’s imaginations are an effective tool, offering the opportunity for awe-inspiring inquiries into such areas as ancient history, chemistry, astronomy and paleontology.

Through the process of discovery, students develop their passion for learning as they grasp the idea that knowledge has no limits.

Collaborative work

This strong academic focus is augmented by collaborative work, as well as physical education. Lessons in cultural subjects, such as visual, dramatic and musical arts, are an integral part of the elementary program. Students also receive instruction in a second language.

CMS graduates

Graduates of CMS Elementary are well prepared socially and academically for the next step in their education. Over 90% of CMS students who remain through our Upper Elementary program are accepted into their first-choice secondary school. Our graduates have gone on to attend some of the most prestigious secondary schools in the St. Louis area.

CMS students have gone on to successful experiences at a variety of colleges, including Ivy League schools, small liberal arts colleges, and large public and private research universities. The majority of CMS alumni have gravitated toward careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and medicine); however, our graduates are also represented in entrepreneurship, finance, the arts and other fields. The creativity, collaboration, growth-mindset, emotional intelligence, respect and independence our students gain during their time in our authentic Montessori Elementary program serve them well throughout their lives.

Middle school is a critical time for adolescents as they mature and develop along their academic and personal journeys. In the spirit of Maria Montessori’s educational philosophy, the CMS Adolescent Program (AP) provides a holistic, interdisciplinary education that incorporates movement, purposeful work, extensive time outdoors, as well as creative and critical thinking.

Geography is a vibrant aspect of the Montessori Elementary and generates spontaneous, active, self-renewing interest. A love of learning blossoms in the children, and many develop a lifelong fascination with elements of their world. We invite you to visit our school and see this love of learning firsthand!

We have had an amazing experience at CMS; our daughter is in first grade and is thriving and loves going to school every day! I love how children are guided through the learning process, but learn how to develop some autonomy and can take their interests into account.

We choose to send our children to CMS for Elementary and Middle School because it is a place where kids can develop their minds and social skills in a safe and supported environment.

The self confidence they develop is so amazing to see, and it really is the key to their future success and happiness. We wish every child could have this wonderful opportunity!
